–¿Diga?

–¿Venancio Cifuentes?

–Sí. ¿Quién es?

–Inspector de policía Sánchez. Me gustaría verlo y hacerle unas preguntas.

–¿Ahora mismo?

English School

Puis ne suis ce que j’ai été,
Et ne le saurais jamais être.
Mon beau printemps et mon été
On fait le saut par la fenêtre.

Amour, tu as été mon maître,

Rome
Joseph Mallord William Turner

Yace donde reinaba el Palatino;
y limadas del tiempo las medallas,
más se muestran destrozo a las batallas
de las edades que blasón latino.

Sólo el Tibre quedó, cuya corriente,
si ciudad la regó, ya sepoltura,
la llora con funesto son doliente.

¡Oh, Roma!, en tu grandeza, en tu hermosura,
huyó lo que era firme, y solamente
lo fugitivo permanece y dura.

just james

Jean-Pierre Hoschedé & Michel Monet dessinant
Claude Monet

Just James

Who makes the sun to chuckle
With those burning flames?
Just James.

Whom the shining stars adore
And the blue moon claims?
Just James.

Who travels, travels and travels
In trains, boats and planes?
Just James.

Who ties that wondrous necktie
Like lilies at games?
Just James.

Whom do I worship and cherish
Without any shames?
Just James.

the meeting on the turret stairs

The Meeting on the Turret Stairs, 1864
Frederick William Burton

The theme comes from a medieval Danish ballad which describes how Hellelil fell in love with Hildebrand, Prince of Engelland, one of her twelve personal guards. Her father orders his seven sons to kill him. Hildebrand kills her father and six brothers before Hellelil intercedes to save the youngest. Hildebrand dies of his wounds and Hellelil herself dies shortly afterwards.

Burton did not choose a violent episode and instead freely interpreted the story, placing their farewell on the turret stairs and leaving the reason for it to the imagination. His invention of the kiss on the woman's outstretched arm and the lack of eye contact adds to the poignancy of the painting.

el sueño de shelley

Portrait of Shelley writing Prometheus Unbound
Joseph Severn
(Keats-Shelley Memorial House, Rome)

she walks in beauty

Study for 'The Lady Clare', c.1900
John William Waterhouse

She Walks in Beauty
George Gordon, Lord Byron

I

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow’d to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

II

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impair’d the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

III

And on that cheek, and o’er the brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

Ella camina en la hermosura

I

de climas sin nubes y cielos estrellados;

o delicadamente ilumina su rostro;

tan dulces, sosegados, aunque elocuentes,

Miniature portrait of Lord Byron, 1815
James Holmes

rondel

A Child Blowing on an Ember, early 1570s
El Greco

Rondel
Tristan Corbière

Il fait noir, enfant, voleur d'étincelles !
Il n'est plus de nuits, il n'est plus de jours ;
Dors... en attendant venir toutes celles
Qui disaient : Jamais ! Qui disaient : Toujours !

Entends-tu leurs pas ?... Ils ne sont pas lourds :
Oh ! les pieds légers ! – l'Amour a des ailes...
Il fait noir, enfant, voleur d'étincelles !

Entends-tu leurs voix ?... Les caveaux sont sourds.
Dors : Il pèse peu, ton faix d'immortelles :

Ya no hay más noches, ya no hay más días;

a echarles piropos torpes a tus damiselas…
¡Está oscuro, niño, ladrón de centellas!
