Claros y frescos ríos - Songs and instrumental pieces from the Spanish Renaissance

Nuria Rial, soprano
José Miguel Moreno, vihuela & Renaissance guitar

¿Qué me queréis, cavallero?
Casada soy, marido tengo.

Casada soy, y a mi grado,
con un cavallero muy honrado,
bien dispuesto y bien criado,
que más que a mí yo lo quiero.
Casada soy, marido tengo.

Casada soy por ventura,
mas no agena de tristura;
pues hize yo tal locura,
de mí misma yo me vengo.
Casada soy, marido tengo.

Gentleman, what do you want of me?
I am married, I got a husband.

I am willingly married
To a very honest gentleman,
Well-disposed and well-bred,
Whom I love more than myself.
I am married, I got a husband.

I am married by good fortune,
Though not unaware of sorrow;
Cause such folly I did
That I take revenge on myself.
I am married, I got a husband.

Dezilde al cavallero
que non se quexe,
que yo le doy mi fe
que non le dexe.

Dezilde al cavallero,
cuerpo garrido,
que non se quexe
en ascondido,
que yo le doy mi fe
que non le dexe.

Tell the gentleman
Not to complain,
For I give him my faith
I will not leave him.

Tell the gentleman
Of handsome body
Not to complain
In secrecy,
For I give him my faith
I will not leave him.

English Lute Songs

Robin Blaze, countertenor
Elizabeth Kenny, lute

Where the bee sucks, there suck I;
In a cowslip’s bell I lie;
There I couch when owls do cry.
On the bat’s back I do fly
After summer merrily.
Merrily, merrily shall I live now
Under the blossom that hangs on the bough.

W. Shakespeare: The Tempest, Act V Scene 1

Libo donde la abeja liba;
reposo en la campanilla de una prímula;
allí me acuesto cuando gritan las lechuzas.
Vuelo a lomos de un murciélago,
persiguiendo alegremente el verano.
Alegremente viviré ahora
bajo la flor que de la rama pende.

beauty is truth, truth beauty

From John Keats’ “Ode on a Grecian Urn”

Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.

La belleza es verdad; la verdad, belleza. Eso es todo
lo que en la tierra sabes, y cuanto necesitas saber.

lord rendal

The Wounded Cavalier, 1855
William Shakespeare Burton

Lord Rendal
Andreas Scholl, countertenor
Andreas Martin, lute

La versión impresa más antigua de esta balada escocesa se encuentra en The Scots Musical Museum (1787). Allí se titula “Lord Ronald, my Son”.

Where have you been all the day,
Rendal, my son?
Where have you been all the day,
My pretty one?
I’ve been to my sweetheart, mother.
I’ve been to my sweetheart, mother.

Chorus:
Make my bed soon,
For I’m sick to my heart
And I fain would lie down.

What have you been eating,
Rendal, my son?
What have you been eating,
My pretty one?
O eels and eel broth, mother.
O eels and eel broth, mother.

Chorus

Where did she get them from,
Rendal, my son?
Where did she get them from,
My pretty one?
From hedges and ditches, mother.
From hedges and ditches, mother.

Chorus

What was the colour on their skin,
Rendal, my son?
What was the colour on their skin,
My pretty one?
O spickit and sparkit, mother.
O spickit and sparkit, mother.

Chorus

What will you leave your father,
Rendal my son?
What will you leave your father,
My pretty one?
My land and houses, mother.
My land and houses, mother.

Chorus

What will you leave your mother,
Rendal my son?
What will you leave your mother,
My pretty one?
My gold and silver, mother.
My gold and silver, mother.

Chorus

What will you leave your brother,
Rendal my son?
What will you leave your brother,
My pretty one?
My cows and horses, mother.
My cows and horses, mother.

Chorus

What will you leave your lover,
Rendal my son?
What will you leave your lover,
My pretty one?
A rope to hang her, mother.
A rope to hang her, mother.

Make my bed soon,
For I’m sick to my heart
And I fain would lie down.

¿Dónde has estado todo el día,
Rendal, hijo mío?
¿Dónde has estado todo el día,
cariño mío?
He estado con mi novia, madre.
He estado con mi novia, madre.

Estribillo:
Haz pronto mi cama,
pues estoy enfermo hasta el corazón
y de buena gana me echaría.

¿Qué has estado comiendo,
Rendal, hijo mío?
¿Qué has estado comiendo,
cariño mío?
Oh, anguilas y caldo de anguilas, madre.
Oh, anguilas y caldo de anguilas, madre.

Estribillo

¿De dónde las cogió ella,
Rendal, hijo mío?
¿De dónde las cogió ella,
cariño mío?
De los setos y las acequias, madre.
De los setos y las acequias, madre.

Estribillo

¿De qué color era su piel,
Rendal, hijo mío?
¿De qué color era su piel,
cariño mío?
Oh, moteado y rojizo, madre.
Oh, moteado y rojizo, madre.

Estribillo

¿Qué dejarás a tu padre,
Rendal, hijo mío?
¿Qué dejarás a tu padre,
cariño mío?
Mis tierras y casas, madre.
Mis tierras y casas, madre.

Estribillo

¿Qué dejarás a tu madre,
Rendal, hijo mío?
¿Qué dejarás a tu madre,
cariño mío?
Mi oro y plata, madre.
Mi oro y plata, madre.

Estribillo

¿Qué dejarás a tu hermano,
Rendal, hijo mío?
¿Qué dejarás a tu hermano,
cariño mío?
Mis vacas y caballos, madre.
Mis vacas y caballos, madre.

Estribillo

¿Qué dejarás a tu amada,
Rendal, hijo mío?
¿Qué dejarás a tu amada,
cariño mío?
Una soga para que la cuelguen, madre.
Una soga para que la cuelguen, madre.

Haz pronto mi cama,
pues estoy enfermo hasta el corazón
y de buena gana me echaría.
