I
THEY went to sea in a Sieve, they did,
In a Sieve they went to sea:
In spite of all their friends could say,
On a winter’s morn, on a stormy day,
In a Sieve they went to sea!
And when the Sieve turned round and round,
And every one cried, “You’ll all be drowned!”
They called aloud, “Our Sieve ain’t big,
But we don’t care a button! we don’t care a fig!
In a Sieve we’ll go to sea!”
Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.
II
They sailed away in a Sieve, they did,
In a Sieve they sailed so fast,
With only a beautiful pea-green veil
Tied with a ribbon by way of a sail,
To a small tobacco-pipe mast;
And every one said who saw them go,
“O won’t they soon be upset, you know!
For the sky is dark and the voyage is long,
And happen what may, it’s extremely wrong
In a Sieve to sail so fast!”
Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.

The water it soon came in, it did,
The water it soon came in;
So to keep them dry, they wrapped their feet
In a pinky paper all folded neat,
And they fastened it down with a pin.
And they passed the night in a crockery-jar,
And each of them said, “How wise we are!
Though the sky be dark, and the voyage be long,
Yet we never can think we were rash or wrong,
While round in our Sieve we spin!”
Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.

And all night long they sailed away;
And when the sun went down,
They whistled and warbled a moony song
To the echoing sound of a coppery gong,
In the shade of the mountains brown.
“O Timballoo! How happy we are,
When we live in a sieve and a crockery-jar.
And all night long, in the moonlight pale,
We sail away with a pea-green sail,
In the shade of the mountains brown!”
Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.

They sailed to the Western Sea, they did,
To a land all covered with trees,
And they bought an Owl and a useful Cart,
And a pound of Rice, and a Cranberry Tart,
And a hive of silvery Bees.
And they bought a Pig, and some green Jack-daws,
And a lovely Monkey with lollipop paws,
And forty bottles of Ring-Bo-Ree,
And no end of Stilton Cheese.
Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.

And in twenty years they all came back,
In twenty years or more,
And every one said, “How tall they’ve grown!
For they’ve been to the Lakes, and the Torrible Zone,
And the hills of the Chankly Bore!”
And they drank their health, and gave them a feast
Of dumplings made of beautiful yeast;
And every one said, “If we only live,
We, too, will go to sea in a Sieve,–
To the hills of the Chankly Bore!”

Se fueron al mar en un Tamiz, pues sí,
al mar se fueron en un Tamiz:
¡pese a lo que sus amigos dijeran,
una mañana de invierno, un día tormentoso,
al mar se fueron en un Tamiz!
Y cuando el Tamiz empezó a dar vueltas y vueltas,
y todos gritaban: «¡Que os vais a ahogar!»,
ellos exclamaron: «¡Nuestro Tamiz no es grande,
pero nos importa un comino! ¡Nos importa un bledo!
¡En un Tamiz iremos al mar!».
Lejanas y escasas, lejanas y escasas,
son las tierras donde los Jumblies viven;
sus cabezas son verdes, sus manos azules,
y se fueron al mar en un Tamiz.
II
Navegaron en un Tamiz, pues sí,
en un Tamiz navegaron deprisa,
con sólo un bonito trapo de color verde guisante,
atado, a modo de vela, con una cinta
al mástil de una pequeña pipa de tabaco;
y cuantos los veían marchar decían:
«¡Oh, se van a cansar pronto, ya sabes!
Pues el firmamento está oscuro, y el viaje es largo,
y pase lo que pase, ¡es un absoluto error
navegar tan deprisa en un Tamiz!».

son las tierras donde los Jumblies viven;
sus cabezas son verdes, sus manos azules,

III
Enseguida entró el agua, pues sí,
el agua enseguida entró;
y para estar secos, se cubrieron los pies
con un papel rosa bien plegado,
y lo abrocharon con un alfiler.
Y pasaron la noche en un tarro de loza,
y todos dijeron: «¡Qué listos somos!
¡Aunque el firmamento esté oscuro, y el viaje sea largo,
nunca creeremos que fuimos imprudentes y nos equivocamos,
mientras giremos en nuestro Tamiz!».

son las tierras donde los Jumblies viven;
sus cabezas son verdes, sus manos azules,
y se fueron al mar en un Tamiz.
IV
Y navegaron toda la noche;
y cuando se puso el sol,
silbaron y trinaron una canción de luna
al sonido retumbante de un gong de cobre,
bajo la sombra de las montañas pardas.
«¡Oh Timballo! ¡Qué felices somos,
viviendo en un Tamiz y en un tarro de loza,
y toda la noche, a la pálida luz de la luna,
navegamos con una vela de color verde-guisante
bajo la sombra de las montañas pardas!».

V
Navegaron hacia el Mar del Oeste, pues sí,
a una tierra cubierta toda de árboles,
y compraron una Lechuza y una útil Carreta,
y una libra de Arroz, y una Tarta de Arándano,
y una colmena de Abejas plateadas.
Y compraron un Cerdo, y algunas Grajillas verdes,
y un bonito Mono con patas de pirulí,
y cuarenta botellas de Ring-Bo-Ree,
y un sinfín de Queso de Stilton.

VI
Y a los veinte años regresaron,
a los veinte años o más,
y todos dijeron: «¡Qué altos se han hecho!
Pues han estado en los Lagos, y en la Zona Torrible,
¡y en las colinas del Chankley Bore!».
Y bebieron a su salud, y les ofrecieron una fiesta
con pasteles hechos de hermosa levadura;
y todos dijeron: «¡Si vivimos,
también nos iremos al mar en un Tamiz,
¡a las colinas del Chankley Bore!».
