Il trillo del Diavolo es, ciertamente, la sonata programática para violín más famosa del siglo XVIII. Cartier escribió que Tartini «vio al diablo a los pies de su cama tocando el trino que aparece en el último movimiento de la sonata». Y la versión del propio Tartini sobre las circunstancias que supuestamente lo llevaron a su composición aparece en el Voyage d'un Français en Italie (París, 1769) de J. G. de Lalande:

Una noche soñé que hacía un pacto con el diablo por mi alma. Todo vino a mi mandato;  el insólito sirviente anticipaba cada uno de mis deseos. Me asaltó de pronto la idea de prestarle mi violín y ver qué podía hacer con él. Pero mi asombro fue formidable cuando lo oí tocar con habilidad consumada una sonata de tan exquisita belleza que sobrepasaba el más audaz vuelo de mi imaginación. Me sentí arrebatado, transportado, encantado; mi aliento se suspendió, y desperté. Tomando el violín, procuré retener los sonidos que había oído. Pero en vano. La pieza que compuse entonces, la Sonata del Diablo, aunque sea la mejor que jamás haya escrito, ¡está tan lejos de la que oí en mi sueño!...

Lalande añade que Tartini compuso la obra en 1713, lo cual sería muy temprano por el estilo de la música. Seguramente data de los últimos años de la década de 1740, o es posterior a esa fecha. El trino aparece en el enérgico Allegro assai que repetidamente interrumpe un gentil Andante, representando, presumiblemente, al compositor dormido.
