la fuente y el fantasma

Acabo de ver un fantasma literario. No ha sido en sueños, estoy bien despierto; mis doloridas narices pueden dar fe.

Era justo el mediodía, y los rayos de sol atravesaban la penumbra del patio techado. En el centro del patio hay una fuente a la que descienden seis escalones circulares. Dos franjas de luz caían a ambos lados de la fuente, como enmarcándola.

–You’re too pliant –pronunció una voz.

Recostada plácidamente en una columna, la sombra desconocida parecía tener buen aspecto. Era un hombre joven. Vestía de negro, pero sus ojos relucían. Hamlet, adiviné.

Caminó hacia la fuente –sin que se oyeran sus pasos–, descendió los escalones y empezó a jugar con el agua.

–¿Qué significa pliant? –inquirí.

La sombra, entornando los ojos, repitió:

–You’re too pliant.

–¿Es ése todo tu repertorio? Me figuro que tendré que buscarlo en el diccionario.

Una sonrisa iluminó el rostro de Hamlet.

–Pliant –dijo, y luego, en perfecto castellano– significa “cimbreante”.

Creo que trastabillé del susto cuando acabó de emitir la última sílaba. ¡El fantasma hablaba español! Y casi, diríase –muy natural en un ectoplasma libresco–, con acento de Valladolid. Lo miré sin poder disimular el asombro.

Preferí callarme el pormenor de que ésa era la primera vez que yo oía la palabra “cimbreante”. Al parecer adivinó mi desconcierto y, abandonando el juego del agua, añadió de modo tácito:

–Flexible, maleable.

Confundido y aún con algo de recelo, ensayé una sonrisa antes que se borrara la suya.

–¿Por qué lo dices? ¿No está bien?

Hamlet retomó su juego; absorto en él, no me había oído. Alcé la voz y volví a preguntar. No obtuve una respuesta inmediata. Sin embargo, el temor fue extinguiéndose lentamente mientras en mi cabeza, ignoro por qué, sonaba una canción de Los Beatles.

–No está mal, supongo –dijo Hamlet–. ¿Has leído la fábula del roble y el junco? Yo no, pero he visto la película. A propósito, ¿por qué te pones a tararear en tu cabecita el “Paperback Writer”? Eres incorregible. Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book? It took me years to write, will you take a look? No, gracias, en otra ocasión.

Ya nada me sorprendía de Hamlet. Estuve a punto de reconocer que era mi anti-héroe favorito. Pero, ¿quién le pediría un autógrafo al Príncipe de Dinamarca?

Tampoco había leído yo la fábula, y además ignoraba en ese mismo instante cómo expresar mi absoluto e inane descontento. Así que, tomando aire y mirándolo gravemente a los ojos, dije:

–Books delight me not. My imagination is a wounded bird, a limping dog, a self-pitying brute that enjoys in sorrow and wallows amid a roaring sea of inborn lament and everlasting grief… Books, which used to be my joy, my ticket to other rides, are now steep mountains to climb with scarce air. I can focus no more in a paragraph than in the shadow of the waning moon!

Mi perorata, por algún motivo, pareció indignar al espectro. De improviso sacó una calavera de un morral que colgaba de su cintura y, alejándose de la fuente, se acercó con ímpetu, aunque despacio, a estampármela en las narices.

Hamlet, en mala hora para mí, se había decidido a actuar.
