the kelmscott chaucer

Frontispiece, from 'The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer now newly Imprinted' (Kelmscott Press, 1896)
Types, ornaments, and initials designed by William Morris
Woodcut illustration designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones

Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote,
The droghte of March hath perced to the roote,
And bathed every veyne in swich licour
Of which vertu engendred is the flour;
Whan Zephirus eek with his swete breeth
Inspired hath in every holt and heeth
The tendre croppes, and the yonge sonne
Hath in the Ram his halfe cours yronne,
And smale foweles maken melodye,
That slepen al the nyght with open eye,
So priketh hem nature in hir corages;
Thanne longen folk to goon on pilgrimages,
And palmeres for to seken straunge strondes,
To ferne halwes, kowthe in sondry londes;
And specially, from every shires ende
Of Engelond, to Caunterbury they wende,
The hooly blisful martir for to seke,
That hem hath holpen whan that they were seeke.

more on the way

Fairy, illustration from 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', published by Heinemann, 1908
Arthur Rackham

I have only two dreams left,
But there are more on the way.
It seems as if of everything,
Of pains, and loves, and songs, and dreams,
There would be more on the way.

sylvestre et la lune

Sylvestre, le grand et mistérieux chat,
Passait celle nuit-là sur un joli toit.
La Lune lui a cru un roi ou pacha.
«Que veux-tu?» dit-elle. «Demande-le-moi.»
«Je voudrais cinq chattes et faire mes achats!»
Répondit Sylvestre en esprit de joie.
«Donc te donnerai or, argent et foi»
Scintilla la Lune, et après marcha.
