El compositor alemán Christoph Willibald Gluck estrenó su ópera Orfeo ed Euridice en Viena en 1762, con libreto de Ranieri de’ Calzabigi. Revisó más tarde la partitura en dos ocasiones. Para una representación parisiense de 1774, en francés, hizo cambios significativos y amplió la obra incluyendo números nuevos, como las Danzas de las Furias y de los Espíritus Benditos.

Hay que decir que esta versión del mito clásico concluye de un modo dichoso. Orfeo y Eurídice pueden reunirse al final gracias a los favores del tercer personaje solista de la obra: Amor.

En la Escena II del Acto Segundo, tras haber cruzado el tormentoso y oscuro Érebo, Orfeo llega a los Campos Elíseos y entona la serena aria “Che puro ciel!”.
