The Meeting on the Turret Stairs, 1864

The theme comes from a medieval Danish ballad which describes how Hellelil fell in love with Hildebrand, Prince of Engelland, one of her twelve personal guards. Her father orders his seven sons to kill him. Hildebrand kills her father and six brothers before Hellelil intercedes to save the youngest. Hildebrand dies of his wounds and Hellelil herself dies shortly afterwards.

Burton did not choose a violent episode and instead freely interpreted the story, placing their farewell on the turret stairs and leaving the reason for it to the imagination. His invention of the kiss on the woman's outstretched arm and the lack of eye contact adds to the poignancy of the painting.

Shelley estaba siempre leyendo; a la hora de comer tenía un libro a su lado, abierto sobre la mesa. El té y las tostadas podían caer en el olvido muchas veces, su autor apenas; el cordero con patatas podía enfriarse; su interés en una obra, nunca. Salía invariablemente con un libro en la mano, leyendo para sí mismo si se encontraba a solas; y si lo acompañaba alguien, leyendo en voz alta. Se llevaba un volumen a la cama, y leía tanto tiempo como le durase la vela; luego se dormía –impacientemente, sin duda– hasta que llegaba la luz, y retomaba la lectura nada más amanecer. A consecuencia de esta prolongada vigilia, y de esas lecturas casi incesantes, en muchas ocasiones le vencía el sueño durante el día, y se quedaba dormido enseguida, como un niño. A menudo se dejaba ir en silencio de la silla al suelo, y dormía profundamente sobre la alfombra, y en invierno sobre el tapete, deleitándose con el calor igual que un gato; y lo mismo que un gato, se tostaba la cabeza redonda y pequeña al resplandor del fuego. Si alguien, humanamente, cubría su pobre cabeza para protegerlo del calor, él, mientras dormía, apartaba con impaciencia aquello que lo cubriese.

Southey era adicto a leer sus terribles poemas épicos –antes que fueran impresos– a cualquiera que pareciese una víctima propicia para ese experimento cruel. Pronto puso los ojos en el recién llegado y un día, tras abordar a Shelley, inmediatamente lo encerró a buen recaudo en un pequeño estudio del piso superior, cuidándose de cerrar la puerta tras de sí y su prisionero, y guardándose la llave en el bolsillo del chaleco. Había una ventana en la habitación, cierto es, pero a tan gran altura del suelo que el mismísimo Barón Trenck no se hubiese valido de ella. «Ahora va usted a disfrutar», dijo Southey; «pero, siéntese». El pobre Bysshe suspiró, y tomó asiento junto a la mesa. El autor se sentó enfrente, y colocando su MS. sobre la mesa, delante de él, empezó a leer con lentitud y claridad. El poema, si no me equivoco, era “La maldición de Kehamah”. Encantado de su propia composición, el maravillado autor prosiguió la lectura, variando el tono de voz ocasionalmente con objeto de señalar los pasajes más hermosos e invitar al aplauso. Pero no había alabanza, ni crítica; sólo silencio. Esto resultaba extraño. Southey alzó los ojos del MS. primorosamente escrito: Shelley había desaparecido. Esto era aún más extraño. No había escapatoria posible; toda precaución había sido tomada y, sin embargo, se había esfumado. Shelley, sin hacer ruido, se había deslizado de la silla al suelo, y el joven vándalo insensible yacía enterrado bajo la mesa, sumido en profundo sueño.
